Elite Gym Experiences: Beyond Fit with Ia Falo

With JoeToProAthlete.com, I’m on a mission to find the world’s best gyms and strength coaches.  I’ve already trained with some of the best, and visited some amazing facilities.  I’ve trained with international weightlifting coaches, visited with Olympic athletes, and trained in Tim Tebow’s gym.  Today, I want to introduce a newer gym, ready to take its place among the elite.  I guarantee this place will reach the level of the others I mentioned.

Beyond Fit is a small training facility owned by Ia and Nichole Falo; two former collegiate athletes whose success in athletics is translating into big time results in functional fitness.

I’ve spent the past couple of months training with Ia.  A former walk-on at Boise State University, Ia finished his career as a team captain on the famous Fiesta Bowl Champion Bronco’s team of 2007.  Even more impressive, is that he did it all at about 160 lbs.  And that’s just the tip of the ice-burg for the hard working coach Falo, who has achieved highly in many other sports.  Ia currently competes in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at a world class level.  He won NAGA Nationals in 2009 and has won the NorthWest Submission Challenge 2 years running.  As a strength coach and wrestling instructor, he has coached BJJ artists for International Competition, plus MMA fighters in Pride and Bellator (look out for his client Casey Johnson, an up-and-comer at 125 lbs.).

So, naturally, I asked Ia to help me get ready for my first grappling tournament.  I’ve still got a lot of work to do, but my goal is to enter a BJJ tournament in November.    With Ia, I’ve been working hard on core strength for maintaining balance and positions, some agility work for jiu-jitsu, plus lots of conditioning.  Ia is a tough dude.  There’s no quitting during one of his training sessions.  Can’t do another rep?  So What?  Do it anyway!

When I asked Ia to sum up his training style in a few words, and to tell me what makes his workouts different from the “buns and guns” programs at so many big box gyms, this is what he said:

“I’ve been there.  I know what it takes to be a champion.  I try to share that with each one of my clients, and that’s what makes training here unique.”

I’ve been extremely blessed for spending some time with the great coaches and athletes at Beyond Fit.  Next month, I’ll be visiting with Strongman and Powerlifting expert Nate Tuttle.  We’ll be doing a series of demo. videos on strongman and modified strongman training.  Stay tuned!
